Medicare

Medicare is a national health insurance program for people age 65 and older and for people with certain disabilities, including permanent kidney failure. Established in 1965, Medicare is administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service. Although Medicare was designed to cover some of your health care expenses, there are deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance that you have to pay. Original Medicare also does not cover routine physicals, eye exams or outpatient prescription drugs. These out of pocket expenses can quickly add up, putting a strain on your finances. There are four parts to Medicare.

Part A: Is hospital insurance that helps pay for inpatient care in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Most people do not pay a premium for this coverage.

Part B: Is medical insurance that helps pay for medically necessary services and supplies provided by Medicare. Most people will have to pay a premium to receive this coverage. Part B covers doctor visits, physicians’ services, physical or occupational therapists, lab tests, durable medical equipment and outpatient hospital treatment.

Part C: Medicare Part C is a combination of Part A and Part B. The difference is that private insurance companies approved by Medicare provide this coverage rather than Medicare. With this program you may have lower costs and receive extra benefits. In most cases these plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D). The down side is that Part C benefits are not guaranteed renewable.

Part D: Is the prescription drug plan that is handled through private insurance sectors. This was added in 2006 to give Medicare patients a plan to have discounted and reduced prescription costs. It can be purchased separately or as part of your Medicare C plan.
